Final Fantasy 1 on the streets of Gdańsk + the start of a game diary

Final Fantasy 1 on the streets of Gdańsk + the start of a game diary

It’s a weird feeling playing Final Fantasy 1, knowing this game is as old as I am (37 years). And the feeling was even stronger because I was playing it while walking through the streets of my hometown, Gdańsk, Poland—a place I don’t live in anymore—on a tiny Miyoo Mini, a handheld that literally fits in the palm of my hand.

Even after all these years, it’s still a great game! The pixel art hasn’t aged a bit (though to be fair, I’m playing the GBA version with refreshed visuals, not the original NES release). The battles are engaging. The magic system is cool—each tier of magic has four spells, but your mage can only learn three of them, so you always have to make choices. The world is interesting. Exploring it feels rewarding, especially when you pick up bits of lore from NPCs, slowly piecing together the bigger picture.

Back in the day, whenever I played something really good, I kept a journal—a mix of a game diary, a quote collection, and a catalog of interesting places/characters/items I came across. I loved doing it, but back then, my notes were mostly words. A lot of words. Writing everything down took ages, and finding something later was just as time-consuming.

Recently, I got back into my ‘game diary’ habit, but now I mostly rely on scribbled waterproof fineliner sketches, with watercolor washes to add color and clarity. These doodles take way less time than writing everything out, and I can instantly understand them at a glance.

PS: In future posts I’ll share a few more pages from game diary—I barely got started on this walk.

Train Ride from Łódź to Gdańsk + Watercolor Final Fantasy 1 map

Train Ride from Łódź to Gdańsk + Watercolor Final Fantasy 1 map

I spent the last part of my vacation in my hometown, Gdańsk, Poland, which is halfway across the country from the village I live in now.

I brought four handhelds with me (Anbernic RG40XXV, Miyoo Mini, Nintendo DSi, and Super Pocket), but honestly, apart from a bit of gaming on the RG40XXV during my train ride from Łódź to Gdańsk, I ended up playing exclusively on the Miyoo Mini for the rest of the trip.

It’s crazy how fast I fell in love with this tiny thing! It’s half the size of the RG40XXV, which makes it way easier to just pull it out of a case or a pocket whenever. The buttons feel great to press, and it’s got a super handy volume dial.

And hands down, Onion OS is the best firmware I’ve seen on a retro handheld. It’s clean, lets you easily toggle system modules on and off, and has two features I wouldn’t want to go without anymore: Activity Tracker and the Game Switcher.

During those few days, I played a bunch of games—Contra (NES), Metroid Fusion (GBA), and Advance Wars (GBA)—but by far, I spent the most time on Final Fantasy 1, the version from Final Fantasy I & II: Dawn of Souls (GBA).

Before the trip, I even made my own map for Final Fantasy 1, simplifying the ones I found online. First, I sketched it in pencil, then painted it with watercolors, and finally outlined it with waterproof fineliners. I love doing analog stuff while gaming—paper maps, notebooks filled with notes and sketches—it makes the experience so much richer for me.

I Got Off at the Łódź Widzew Platform and Walked to the City Centre & Continued the Advance Wars Tutorial

I Got Off at the Łódź Widzew Platform and Walked to the City Centre & Continued the Advance Wars Tutorial

My companion this time was the tiny Miyoo Mini.

During this walk, I met an older man who told me about the days when Łódź was alive day and night. The textile factories ran in two shifts, and trains carried goods across the country. Back then, most of Poland’s clothes were made here, along with the fabrics. Then production moved to China, and the whole industry collapsed.
